MOVIE REVIEW: Made of Honor – a Whorer Story

Tom Bailey (Patrick Dempsey) will do anything to win the woman he loves. That includes becoming her maid of honor, competing in traditional Scottish games of manliness, and wearing a “mini-kilt” that draws the ridicule of everyone, even the kids. It’s all in Made of Honor, which plays at the Carmike Cinema Lakeshore Mall.

SEBRING, May 7, 2008 – Hollywood has failed sex education.

No surprise, perhaps, but, still, you would think after all the national attention placed on the dangers of promiscuity, sexually transmitted diseases, and unprotected sex that Hollywood would at least make a comedy that glowed with a glimmer of intelligence.

You won’t find any in Made of Honor, where slut-sleeper Tom Bailey indulges each and every urge with one dumb broad after the other, none two nights in a row. Despite his never-sated philandering, his best friend, Hannah, loves him, and it is easy to predict their eventual union, despite the speed bumps the script throws at their romance.

What is astonishing is the lack of any mention that Hannah just might be a little concerned about the possibility that Tom is a carrier of AIDS/HIV, Herpes, Syphillis, Gonnorhea, et. al. She is not at all concerned that after a lifetime of self-indulgence, it might be just a little bit difficult for Tom to change into a pure and chaste exemplar of fidelity, especially since while she’s been his best friend, he not only continues his carnality but broadcasts it to her.

The characters in this movie beg for psychoanalysis and pastoral care.

Yes, funny moments exist. The acting is OK despite an insipid script. The direction is mediocre. The plot made of straw. The ending is silly and unimaginative. The soundtrack is the usual mix of pointless pop songs. Watching this movie is like ordering a Coke and getting a cup of the syrup. Yuck!

Patrick Dempsey is Tom. Michelle Monaghan plays Hannah. Made of Honor is rated PG-13 for sexual content and language. It plays at the Carmike Cinema in the Lakeshore Mall.
